Did you know that sleeping in on the weekends might actually help your heart? 🛌❤️ A recent study shared at the European Society of Cardiology’s annual meeting revealed some fascinating findings about the benefits of weekend “catch-up” sleep.
Here’s What the Study Found:
- Sleeping in on weekends can lower the risk of heart disease by up to 20%.
- People who miss out on sleep during the week seem to benefit the most.
- Participants who got the most weekend sleep saw a big difference compared to those who didn’t.
Researchers analyzed nearly 91,000 people over an average of 14 years as part of the UK Biobank project. Those who were sleep-deprived (getting less than 7 hours per night) showed the most improvement when they caught up on sleep during the weekend.
At Cross County Cardiology, we reviewed this study and believe it highlights the importance of prioritizing rest for heart health. While sleeping in on weekends can help, it’s no replacement for consistent, quality sleep throughout the week. Think of weekend catch-up sleep as a helpful boost, not a long-term solution.
Our Take:
Your heart loves rest! If you can, aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night. And if life gets in the way during the week, those extra weekend hours could help reduce some of the stress on your heart.
